Overview
This article explains how to configure the Forgotten Password feature for the End User Portal.
In order for end users to be able to use the Forgotten Password feature, the Retail Service Provider must:
- set up the required Event template(s).
- enable the event(s)
- configure the feature settings
- enable the feature
Once enabled, clicking the Forgot your Password? will take the end user to the page seen on the right where they can reset their password.
Reset Options
End users have up to 3 options reset their password. These options are the means by which our system will authenticate that the end user is in fact a valid and an active customer of yours as a security measure against unauthorised attempts to reset random user passwords.
Reset Option | Requirements | Result |

Reset using Mobile Number | An end user must have a mobile configured against their contact. This must be a valid number. The SMS template must be created, mapped and enabled. The variable %%newPassword%% must be present. | A new password will be generated and sent to the end user's mobile phone via SMS. |
Reset using Email Address | An end user must have an email address configured against their contact. This must be a valid email address. The Email template must be created, mapped and enabled. The variable %%resetLink%% must be present. | An email will be sent to the end user's email address with a link that needs to be clicked so they may enter a new password. |
Reset using Username | An end user must have a user portal username configured against their account. This must be a valid username. The Email template must be created, mapped and enabled. The variable %%resetLink%% must be present. | An email will be sent to the end user's email address with a link that needs to be clicked so they may enter a new password. |
Set Up the Event Templates
Follow the steps below to set up the required events. Click here if you need assistance on setting up an Event template.
Events > Templates
If you skip this step, the forgotten password feature will be available to your customers, but if they attempt to reset their password, they will not receive a notification and will be unable to reset their password.
Email Event
Events > Templates > Email
The event that sends an email containing a link for the user to reset their password is included in the standard events suite for Retail Service Providers.
Create a new template for Event Type id 944: End User Portal Forgotten Password (via Email).
Once the template is complete, the event can be enabled.
SMS Event
Events > Templates > SMS
The SMS event will be automatically mapped to retail service providers who subscribe to the SMS Events module. If you are interested in subscribing to SMS Events, please create a QR ticket in the Emersion Customer Service portal.
Create a new template for Event Type id 927 End User Portal Forgotten Password (via SMS).
Once the template is complete, the event can be enabled.
Enable the Events
Events > Templates > Mapping
Find the event you wish to enable and under the Actions column, click the Edit button.
Change the Active status to Enabled.
Save the changes.
Configure the Feature Settings
Now that the events are ready, the next step is to:
- define the description text
- define the error text
- enable the feature.
Admin > Settings > End User Portal > Feature Configuration
The user will be taken to the End User Portal Feature Configuration page.
Click the Edit button on the bottom-right to put the page into EDIT mode.
- Enter a description in the Description Text field.This text will be displayed on the Forgotten Password page.
- Enter the text you would like to present to your customers in the event that they provide an email address that is not recognised by the system.
Enable the Feature
Click the Edit button on the bottom-right to put the page into EDIT mode if you have alreayd saved the settings.
- Tick the Enable Forgotten Password Support flag. This flag turns the feature on and off.
- When you are finished, press the Save button.
