Overview

This article contains a detailed explanation of the life cycle of a usage record in the Emersion platform.

The Usage Life Cycle

The life cycle of usage is shown the diagram on the right.

Upon receiving usage from the carrier, the system will unpack it and sort it into three categories

  • telephony usage such as calls, SMSs, etc
  • data usage, such as DSL, NBN, etc.
  • miscellaneous. This includes service and equipment charges, service features and anything that does not fall into the above two categories.

Identify

The system will then attempt to identify a matching service in the system using an active service identifier. If a matching service cannot be found, the record will be sent to Quarantine.

Bucket

Once a service is found, the system will then attempt to find a matching subscription period to place the record into based on the usage record date. This is called bucketing the usage (into the correct bucket).  If a matching period cannot be found, he record will be sent to Quarantine.

Rate

One the usage is bucketed, the system will attempt to find a price that is to be charged and calculate the rate for the record. If a price cannot be found, the record will be sent to Quarantine.

Depending on the category of usage, it may look to the rate card, data billing configuration against the service plan or product rate card. One a price is found, the system will take into account any included value settings against the plan, any discounts and rate overrides and calculate the final price.

Usage Mediated

Once the record successfully passes all these gates, it is fully mediated and can be seen under the relevant service.

Where is Mediated Usage Displayed?

In Cumulus, usage is displayed under the relevant service. Active services can be found using the Services > List All search page, performing a search and clicking on one of the following links:

  • service ID
  • service identifier
  • Service Sub ID.

Depending on the type of usage, it will be available via the following pages:

Service Subscription > View Usage

Service Subscription > View Service & Equipment Usage

Service Subscription > Manage Bolt-Ons > View Usage
